Field case study: Solving multi-tank tractor telematics in Zimbabwe with BLE Escort sensors
Executive Summary & Key Takeaways
✓

Harsh agricultural vibrations and tractor chassis articulation routinely shear wired RS-485 sensor cables; BLE Escort FLS completely eliminates wiring failure points.

✓

Dual saddle tanks with cross-connecting equalization pipes cause severe false theft alerts on naive telematics systems during sloshing or slope plowing.

✓

Jeytech's synchronized differential algorithm balances multi-tank volumes in real-time, differentiating natural fuel transfer from true siphoning.

✓

Closed-loop mobile bowser reconciliation matches field dispenser discharge against tractor tank intake via BLE beacon proximity, stopping off-grid diesel diversion.

✓

For single rigid tanks (static generators, long-haul freight), wired FLS (Technoton, Escort TD) remains an ultra-reliable, cost-effective baseline.

Deploying high-precision fuel telematics on commercial long-haul trucks on paved highways is a solved problem. Deploying it on agricultural tractors operating in deep red dust, intense sub-Saharan heat, severe mechanical vibration, and irregular multi-tank geometries is an entirely different engineering challenge.

The Field Problem: BGM Projects Zimbabwe Pilot

In early 2026, Jeytech initiated an intensive real-world telemetry pilot in Zimbabwe with commercial agricultural enterprise BGM Projects. The pilot covered heavy agricultural tractors including the New Holland 8030, Massey Ferguson series, and Landini Tractors, alongside their fleet of mobile diesel fuel bowser trailers used for field refueling.

Agricultural operations in Zimbabwe present three acute operational hazards for traditional fuel monitoring:

  • Physical Cable Destruction: Tractors operate across uneven furrows, thick brush, and rocky terrain. Traditional wired fuel level sensors (FLS) require routing shielded signal cables from the tank along the chassis or under the cab to the telematics terminal. Within 60 to 90 days, brush snagging, high-pressure washing, chassis flexing, and vibration fatigue routinely pinched, snapped, or grounded the sensor cables.
  • Irregular & Saddle Tank Geometries: Modern tractors like the New Holland 8030 and Landini do not use simple rectangular tanks. They use contoured poly or metal saddle tanks draped over drive shafts, or twin tanks connected by an equalizer pipe. When a tractor operates on an incline or plows a furrow, fuel rushes to one side. Naive fleet software registers a sudden 40-liter drop on Tank A as "THEFT" and an increase on Tank B as "REFUEL", flooding dispatchers with bogus alerts.
  • Unaccounted Field Transfers: Fuel is delivered to tractors via 3,000L to 5,000L mobile fuel bowsers directly in the field. Without closed-loop tracking between the bowser dispenser and the tractor tank, thousands of liters disappeared between the main depot storage and the field furrow.

The Solution: BLE Escort FLS Wireless Architecture

To overcome the physical cable bottleneck, Jeytech deployed Escort TD-BLE wireless capacitive fuel level sensors. The Escort BLE sensor is an IP69K explosion-proof capacitive probe engineered for harsh off-road machinery.

By replacing wired cables with Bluetooth Low Energy:

  • Zero Wiring Runs: Sensor heads screw directly into standard SAE 5-bolt flanges on each tank. There are zero signal cables running along the tractor chassis or across articulation points.
  • Ultra-Low Power Autonomy: Integrated lithium thionyl chloride batteries provide up to 7 years of autonomous operation without tapping tractor electrical circuits or risking battery drain during seasonal storage.
  • Sub-Millimeter Resolution: Capacitive measurement with 0.1% accuracy and internal thermal sensors that compensate for diesel density shifts under blazing midday heat.

Wired vs. Wireless: When Do We Use What?

At Jeytech, we are pragmatists, not dogmatists. Wireless BLE is not universally required for every fleet asset:

Parameter Wired FLS (Technoton DUT-E, Escort TD-500) Wireless FLS (Escort TD-BLE)
Best Use Case Single rigid tanks on highway trucks, stationary backup gensets, fuel depots. Agricultural tractors, heavy excavators, dual saddle tanks, mobile fuel bowsers.
Signal Medium RS-485 / CAN J1939 shielded twisted pair. 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy wireless broadcast.
Vulnerability Cable snags in brush, vibration pinching, high labor install. None mechanically; requires BLE-capable gateway.
Multi-Tank Pairing Requires daisy-chaining RS-485 addresses on physical harness. Instant multi-sensor wireless binding to a single gateway.

What Jeytech Does Differently

Great hardware is only half the battle. If your cloud platform cannot make sense of non-linear geometry and multi-tank physics, the data is useless. Here is how the Mobility by Jeytech software platform transforms raw sensor readings into bulletproof operational control:

01

Dynamic Multi-Point Strapping Splines

Tractor tanks taper around the engine bay and wheel arches. A 10mm drop at the top of the tank represents 18 liters, while a 10mm drop at the tapered base represents only 6 liters. Jeytech uses up to 32 calibration points with cubic spline interpolation, mapping millivolt capacitance into exact liter capacity with 99.2% verified field accuracy.

02

Synchronized Differential Engine

When a tractor operates across a 12-degree hillside contour, fuel naturally rushes through the bottom leveling pipe from Left Tank to Right Tank. Jeytech's edge streaming engine tracks the differential: if Tank A drops by 25L while Tank B gains 24.5L, the system knows this is hydraulic leveling, not theft. Real siphoning triggers an immediate alert only when the net combined volume drops abnormally.

03

Closed-Loop Bowser Reconciliation

When BGM Projects dispatches a mobile fuel bowser to refuel tractors in the bush, Jeytech links the bowser's BLE FLS discharge with the receiving tractor's BLE FLS intake in real-time. If the bowser pumps 220 liters but the Massey Ferguson only registers 170 liters, the discrepancy is flagged instantly with exact GPS coordinates and operator ID.

04

Slosh & Incline Kalman Filtering

Plowing across rough ground creates violent fuel wave oscillations inside the tank. Jeytech applies an adaptive Kalman filter paired with the tractor's 3-axis accelerometer data, completely eliminating false spikes without introducing artificial delay into real drain alerts.

The Bottom Line

During the 90-day pilot with BGM Projects, fuel variance across the tractor fleet dropped from an estimated 14% unallocated loss to under 0.8%. Maintenance downtime attributed to damaged sensor cables was reduced to zero.

By pairing field-tested wireless hardware like Escort TD-BLE with Jeytech's high-speed differential software engine, enterprise fleet operators across Africa and emerging markets can finally achieve foolproof fuel visibility in the harshest environments on earth.
